Multilingual website

The entire site has been translated: menus, content, forms and order confirmations. Visitors are automatically shown their own language and can switch between languages. Each language version is treated as a separate site by search engines, so it can also be found in searches for that country.

The language versions are not separate websites but URLs for the same site, which are distinguished from one another by search engines. Without this indication, Google treats them as duplicates of one another.

What you get

  • The language of the entire site. Not just the content, but also menus, buttons, form fields, error messages and automated emails.
  • A separate URL for each language. For example, /en/ and /sv/. The URL can be shared and acts as a link to the correct language version.
  • Search engine tags. The pages inform the search engine about each other, meaning that the English-language version can rank highly in English-language searches without competing against the Finnish-language version.
  • Language selector. A visible option in the header. Changing the language takes you to the relevant page, not the homepage — it’s a small thing, but it’s the most annoying when it’s done wrong.
  • Automatic redirection. On their first visit, visitors are redirected based on their browser’s language setting, but their choice remains in effect if they switch to another language.
  • A translation or a draft translation. You can provide the translation yourself, or have it done for you — the latter is priced separately based on the word count.

Why is the second language cheaper than the first?

Most of the work involves the structure: URLs, language selector, search engine optimisation, separating translatable text from the code, and localising automated messages into multiple languages. This is done once. Once the structure is in place, adding the third and fourth languages is largely a matter of transferring the content into place.

That is why the price is 590 euros for the first additional language and 390 euros for each subsequent one. Three languages therefore cost €980, not €1,770. You select the number of languages on the order form, and the price is calculated automatically.

Who is this suitable for?

Tourism and accommodation, where a large proportion of customers come from abroad. Export-oriented businesses. Bilingual localities. Service sectors with a large number of non-native-speaking customers — construction, cleaning, care, restaurants. And companies that recruit from abroad.

One common mistake: there’s no point in having an English-language page if it isn’t kept up to date. An out-of-date translation is worse than no translation at all. So choose as many languages as you can manage to keep updated.

Is machine translation used?

Use this as a basis if agreed — modern machine translation tools are good. However, I recommend that at least the homepage and service pages are proofread by a native speaker. Machine translation rarely goes completely wrong, but it often sounds a bit awkward, and this can influence the decision to buy.

Is it possible to translate just part of the site?

Oh. The usual solution is to translate the homepage, services and contact details, but leave the blog in Finnish. In that case, the language selector will only show the pages that have been translated.

How many languages are possible?

You can select up to eight items on the order form. For those requiring more than this, we will provide a quote, as it is then worth considering the ongoing maintenance of the translations.

Can a language be added later?

Oh, for the same price. If the framework has already been set up for the first additional language, a new language costs 390 euros.
