Why image size is more important than how they look

The most common reason for a slow Finnish business website is uncompressed images. A camera or mobile phone produces four to eight megabytes per image, and if there are twenty such images in a gallery, the page weighs in at over a hundred megabytes. On a mobile network, that takes minutes.

Google measures page load speed as part of its search ranking, and does so specifically on mobile devices. Speed won’t propel a poor website to the top, but slowness will knock a good one down. That’s why optimisation isn’t just an extra feature here – it’s a prerequisite for the whole gallery.

Who is this suitable for?

Construction and renovation, interior design, landscaping, car washing and painting, hairdressers, photographers, restaurants, accommodation. How many images can fit in the gallery?

No upper limit. The gallery of hundreds of images works because only the number of images currently visible are loaded at any one time. It does take up disk space, but very little when compressed.

Can I add photos using my mobile phone?

You can. This is, in practice, the most important feature: photos from the site go straight into the gallery on the same day, rather than being left on your phone waiting for the right moment.

Will the original image be retained?

It’s preserved. Compressed versions are created alongside it, and the original is kept. If you ever want to print the image, it’s there for you.

Can I add a logo or watermark to the images?

Well, it’s worth considering. A watermark protects the image from being stolen, but at the same time it reduces its quality. For most businesses, the spread of an image is more beneficial than harmful.
